Here's a guide to peak foliage weeks in Central and Southern Maine to help you plan your leaf-peeping adventure.

Peak Foliage Weeks in Maine

According to Maine.gov, the colors in Maine transition from north to south, with the foliage reaching its most vibrant hues across different regions throughout the fall season. Here's when you can expect to see peak colors in Central and Southern Maine:

October 6 - 13: Western and Central Maine (Zones 5 & 3)

If you're planning to visit central Maine or venture into the scenic western mountains, this is the ideal week. The hillsides will be ablaze with vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows, offering stunning views and picturesque landscapes.

October 14 - 20: Central Maine (Zone 3) & Eastern Maine (Zone 4)

The best time to catch peak colors in Central Maine is during mid-October. From the vibrant forests of Augusta to the colorful landscape surrounding Fryeburg, the trees will be at their most stunning.

  • Suggested Locations: Skowhegan, Fryeburg, the greater Augusta area, and the scenic backroads leading to Rumford and Farmington.

October 21 - 27: Southern Maine (Zone 1) & Coastal Maine (Zone 2)

As we head into late October, southern Maine hits its peak foliage week. The coastline and areas south of Portland will be showing off their full autumn glory. If you're located in the Portland, Kennebunkport, or Wells area, this is the time to catch the final wave of fall colors before the season comes to an end.

  • Suggested Locations: Sebago Lake, the towns of Bridgton and Waterboro, Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, Wells, and York.
